Udio Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives

AI music generator that creates full songs with vocals from text prompts, now inside a licensed platform.

FreemiumAudio & VoiceReviewed October 2026

What is Udio?

Udio is an AI music generator that writes full songs, with vocals, lyrics and instruments, from a short text prompt. You describe a genre, mood or theme, pick or write lyrics, and Udio produces short clips that you can extend, remix and arrange into complete tracks inside its timeline-based Sessions editor.

Udio is made by Uncharted Labs, founded in December 2023 by former Google DeepMind researchers, and launched in public beta in April 2024. After a 2024 copyright lawsuit from the major labels, Udio settled with Universal Music Group in October 2025 and signed a deal with Warner Music Group in November 2025, committing to a new platform built on licensed music.

The biggest change for users is that downloads have been disabled since 29 October 2025, so songs stay inside Udio for listening and sharing. That makes it a creative playground rather than a tool for producing tracks you release elsewhere. Its strength remains the realism of its vocals and the fine control it gives through inpainting and remixing.

How to get started with Udio

  1. Sign up at udio.com.
  2. Type a style prompt, such as genre, mood and instruments.
  3. Add your own lyrics or let Udio write them.
  4. Extend the best clip and arrange it in Sessions.
  5. Publish the finished track to share it on Udio.

Tips to get better results from Udio

  • Keep style prompts short and specific; three or four descriptors work best.
  • Use inpainting to fix a single bad lyric instead of regenerating the song.
  • Check the current download policy before paying if you need files.

Udio vs alternatives

Suno is Udio’s closest rival and still offers downloads on paid plans. AIVA focuses on instrumental and orchestral composition with MIDI export, while Soundraw and Mubert provide royalty-free background music for creators.

Choose Udio if you want high-quality vocals for fun and sharing within its community. If you need tracks for videos or releases, pick a tool with clear download and licensing terms. See all best AI voice and audio tools.

Our verdict: is Udio worth it?

Udio still produces some of the most convincing AI vocals, and its editing tools are excellent. But with downloads disabled since late 2025, it suits hobbyists and songwriters exploring ideas, not creators who need music files for their projects.
