Pi by Inflection Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
A free, conversational personal AI from Inflection, built for supportive chat, advice and voice talk.
What is Pi by Inflection?
Pi is a personal AI assistant made by Inflection AI. Launched in May 2023, it was designed to be kind, supportive and conversational rather than a productivity powerhouse. Pi asks follow-up questions, remembers context within your chats and is happy to simply talk things through, whether that is a decision you are weighing, a topic you are curious about or a stressful day.
Inflection went through big changes in March 2024 when Microsoft hired co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan and much of the team. The company, now led by CEO Sean White, shifted towards enterprise AI and added usage caps to free Pi in August 2024. In July 2026 it turned back towards consumers, launching Inflection AI Labs, an experiment called Pi Journeys and updates to Pi’s voice, memory and everyday tools.
What sets Pi apart is its personality. It is less about writing reports or code and more about natural back-and-forth, with expressive voices and a warm tone. Inflection says Pi now routes requests across several models, some proprietary and some open source, rather than relying on a single frontier model.

Pi by Inflection vs alternatives
Compared with ChatGPT and Claude, Pi does far less: no deep research, coding agents or large file analysis. In return it is free and focused on relaxed, supportive conversation, which many people find more pleasant for casual chats and voice talk.
If you want role-play and character chats, Character.AI is more flexible. Meta AI is another free option built into apps you may already use. For structured mental wellbeing support, Wysa is designed specifically for that purpose. See all best chatbots & assistants tools.
Our verdict: is Pi by Inflection worth it?
Pi is one of the friendliest AI companions for conversation and voice chat, and it costs nothing. It is not the tool for heavy research, writing or coding, but if you want a patient sounding board on your phone, it is well worth trying. Pair it with a general-purpose assistant for serious work.
