Scite Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
Shows whether later papers support, contrast or mention a study, plus an AI assistant grounded in citations.
What is Scite?
Scite is a research platform built around Smart Citations. Instead of only counting how often a paper is cited, it shows the sentence where each citation appears and labels it as supporting, contrasting or mentioning. On top of that index it offers the Scite Assistant, an AI chat that answers questions with references you can trace back to specific sentences in papers.
Scite was founded in 2018 in Brooklyn, New York, with Josh Nicholson as CEO. Research Solutions, a company that sells research and document delivery services, announced it was acquiring Scite on 27 November 2023, and Scite now describes itself as part of Research Solutions. Its website says it indexes more than 280 million full-text articles, preprints, books, patents and datasets and has more than 2 million users.
What makes Scite different is that it judges the context of a citation, not just the count. A paper with hundreds of citations might be widely disputed, and Scite makes that visible. Recent additions include MCP access so you can use Scite inside Claude, ChatGPT and other agent tools, plus datasets of patents, clinical trials and grants on the Pro plan.
Key features of Scite

- Scite AssistantAn AI research chat whose answers cite real papers and link to the exact supporting sentences.
- Search with citation filtersSearch the full-text index and filter results by citation type, section, year or publication type.
- Reference CheckUpload a manuscript to see how each reference has been cited and flag retracted or disputed sources.

Who is Scite best for?
- Researchers and PhD students who want to know whether a key finding has held up before building on it.
- Journal editors and reviewers because Reference Check quickly flags weak or retracted references in a manuscript.
- Pharma, medical and industry R&D teams who need evidence trails and access to patents, clinical trials and grants data.
Popular ways to use Scite
- Testing a claim: look up a well-known finding and see how many later studies support or contrast it.
- Checking a manuscript: run Reference Check before submission to catch retracted or disputed references.
- Answering a research question: ask the Assistant and follow its citations to the exact sentences in each paper.
- Monitoring a field: set alerts on a collection of papers to see new citations as they appear.
- Grounding an AI agent: connect Scite to Claude or ChatGPT through MCP so answers draw on scholarly sources.

Scite pros and cons
Pros
- Unique supporting and contrasting citation labels
- Assistant answers link to the exact source sentences
- Reference Check is useful for authors and editors
- Works inside Claude and ChatGPT through MCP
Cons
- No permanent free plan, only a trial
- API access needs the Pro plan or higher
- Citation labels are AI classifications and can be wrong
- Coverage is best where publishers share full text
How to get started with Scite
- Create an account at scite.ai and start the 7-day trial, or log in through your institution.
- Search for a paper you know and open its Smart Citation report.
- Filter the citing statements to contrasting ones to see where the finding is disputed.
- Ask the Assistant a research question and click through to the cited sentences.
- Install the browser extension or Zotero plugin to see Smart Citations while you read.
Tips to get better results from Scite
- Read contrasting citations in full, since a contrasting label can reflect a nuance rather than a failed replication.
- Use Reference Check on your own drafts to catch retracted papers before reviewers do.
- Build a collection for your thesis and turn on alerts so you see new citations.
- Ask your library whether your university already has Scite access before paying.
Scite vs alternatives
Consensus gives faster yes-or-no answers drawn from study findings, while Scite is better at showing how a specific paper has been received over time. Elicit focuses on screening and extracting data for systematic reviews, and SciSpace covers more of the reading and writing workflow.
For free discovery, Semantic Scholar offers search, TLDR summaries and citation counts at no cost, though without supporting or contrasting labels. General assistants such as Perplexity or Claude can be connected to Scite through MCP when you want scholarly grounding inside a chat you already use. See all best AI research tools.
Our verdict: is Scite worth it?
Scite is one of the most useful tools for checking whether research findings have been supported or challenged by later work. It suits researchers, editors and R&D teams who need evidence trails; casual users may find the lack of a free plan limiting.
