Microsoft Copilot Studio Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives

Microsoft's low-code platform for building, publishing and managing custom AI agents and workflows.

What is Microsoft Copilot Studio?

Microsoft Copilot Studio is a low-code platform for building AI agents, agent workflows and apps. You describe an agent in natural language or design it on a canvas, connect it to company data and tools, and publish it to Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, SharePoint, a website or other channels. Agents can answer questions, take actions, or run autonomously on business processes.

Microsoft launched Copilot Studio in November 2023, building on Power Virtual Agents, which it absorbed. In September 2025 the billing unit changed from messages to Copilot Credits, with no change to pack sizes or the pay-as-you-go rate. Microsoft now promotes autonomous and multi-agent systems, MCP server support and access to more than 11,000 models through Azure AI Foundry, and says 90% of the Fortune 500 have used Copilot Studio.

What sets Copilot Studio apart is how closely it fits the Microsoft stack. It uses Microsoft Entra security, Power Platform governance, Microsoft Graph data and over 1,500 prebuilt connectors, so IT teams can manage agents like other business apps. The downside is pricing: usage is metered in credits, which can be hard to forecast, and the product is far less appealing outside the Microsoft ecosystem.

Key features of Microsoft Copilot Studio

  • Natural language agent builderDescribe what the agent should do and refine its instructions, knowledge, tools and topics in a low-code designer.
  • Autonomous agentsAgents can react to events, plan steps and handle business processes, escalating to people when needed.
  • 1,500+ connectors and MCPConnect to Microsoft and third-party systems through prebuilt connectors, custom APIs or MCP servers.
  • Model choiceUse default models or pick from 11,000+ models available through Azure AI Foundry.
  • Multi-channel publishingPublish agents to Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, SharePoint, websites and other channels.
  • Governance and analyticsAdmin controls, environment management and usage analytics, including per-agent credit limits.

Who is Microsoft Copilot Studio best for?

  • Microsoft 365 organisations that want agents grounded in SharePoint, Teams and other company data.
  • IT and Power Platform teams that need central governance, security and lifecycle management for agents.
  • Customer service teams building chat or voice agents for websites and support channels.
  • Business makers who want to build agents with low-code tools rather than writing code.

Popular ways to use Microsoft Copilot Studio

  • HR and IT helpdesk: answer policy and how-to questions in Teams from SharePoint content.
  • Customer support: deploy a website agent that answers questions and hands off to staff.
  • Process automation: run autonomous agents that triage requests and update business systems.
  • Sales assistance: pull CRM data and draft account summaries for sellers.
  • Knowledge search: build department agents over internal documents with cited answers.

How to get started with Microsoft Copilot Studio

  1. Start a free trial or sign in with a Microsoft work account.
  2. Create an agent by describing its purpose in plain language.
  3. Add knowledge sources such as SharePoint sites or files, and connect tools.
  4. Test the agent in the built-in chat pane and adjust its instructions.
  5. Publish it to Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot or your website and monitor usage.

Tips to get better results from Microsoft Copilot Studio

  • Set per-agent credit caps early to avoid surprise bills.
  • Check which actions your Microsoft 365 Copilot licence already covers before buying packs.
  • Keep knowledge sources tidy, since outdated documents lead to poor answers.
  • Use approvals for agent actions that change records or contact customers.

Microsoft Copilot Studio vs alternatives

Microsoft Power Automate is better for rule-based flows and RPA, and the two are often used together. Salesforce Agentforce is the equivalent choice for Salesforce-centric companies, while UiPath offers deeper orchestration across legacy systems.

For teams outside the Microsoft stack, Lindy and Relevance AI offer simpler agent builders with clearer self-serve pricing, and Botpress or Voiceflow suit customer-facing chat and voice agents. See all best AI automation tools.

Our verdict: is Microsoft Copilot Studio worth it?

Copilot Studio is the obvious agent builder for organisations already committed to Microsoft 365, thanks to its connectors, security and admin controls. Budget carefully, because credit-based billing can grow quickly with heavy use. Teams outside the Microsoft ecosystem will usually find simpler and cheaper options.
