Lex Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives

Minimalist AI word processor that gives feedback, rewrites and brainstorms inside your draft.

FreemiumWritingReviewed October 2026

What is Lex?

Lex is an AI-powered word processor designed to feel like a calm, minimalist alternative to Google Docs. You write in a clean document, and when you want help you can ask Lex for feedback, brainstorm ideas, suggest titles, or highlight a passage and describe how it should be rewritten. Comments, version history and shareable links make it work for collaborative drafting too.

Lex was created by Nathan Baschez inside the media company Every, launched in 2022 and was spun out as an independent company with a $2.75 million seed round led by True Ventures in August 2023. In 2025 it rolled out Lex V2, adding a redesigned start page, Google Drive import and export, a line editor, personas, a desktop app, knowledge bases and style guides.

Lex’s philosophy is that AI should make you a better writer rather than replace you. Instead of templates that churn out copy, it acts like an editor and thinking partner beside your draft. Lex Pro gives access to newer frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, much higher AI usage and web search. Lex says more than 300,000 writers use it.

Tips to get better results from Lex

  • Keep your own voice by rewriting suggestions instead of pasting them in whole.

Lex vs alternatives

Notion AI offers similar AI help inside a broader workspace, while ChatGPT and Claude can review drafts but require copying text back and forth. Lex keeps the conversation and the document in one focused place.

If you mainly need error correction, Grammarly or ProWritingAid are better. For fiction drafting, Sudowrite is more specialised. Lex suits writers who want a thoughtful AI editor beside a clean page. See all best AI writing tools.

Our verdict: is Lex worth it?

Lex is one of the most pleasant places to write with AI, especially for essays, newsletters and memos. The free plan is enough to test it; upgrade to Pro if you rely on the newest models daily. Marketers looking for copy templates should look elsewhere.
