Snowflake Cortex AI Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
Snowflake's built-in AI layer for SQL AI functions, natural-language analytics and agents on governed data.
What is Snowflake Cortex AI?
Snowflake Cortex AI is the set of AI services built into the Snowflake data platform. It lets teams run large language models over their data with SQL, turn plain-English questions into SQL with Cortex Analyst, search unstructured content with Cortex Search and orchestrate both through Cortex Agents. Models available include Anthropic Claude, Meta Llama and Mistral, all running inside Snowflake’s security perimeter.
Cortex is made by Snowflake Inc. and was first announced in November 2023. In 2025 Snowflake added Cortex AISQL, now called Cortex AI Functions, for analysing text, images and audio with SQL, plus Snowflake Intelligence, an agent for business users. At Snowflake Summit in June 2026 the company renamed Snowflake Intelligence to Snowflake CoWork and Cortex Code to Snowflake CoCo, and moved CoCo to token-based billing on every surface.
The main reason to choose Cortex is that the AI comes to your data rather than the other way round. Existing roles, masking policies and audit trails apply to AI queries, and analysts can use familiar SQL instead of new tools. The catch is that it only makes sense if your data already lives in Snowflake, and consumption-based credits need careful monitoring to keep costs in check.
Key features of Snowflake Cortex AI
- Cortex AI FunctionsCall LLMs from SQL to classify, summarise, extract, translate or filter text, images and audio alongside structured data.
- Cortex AnalystConverts natural-language questions into SQL using a semantic model, so business users can query data accurately.
- Cortex SearchHybrid search over documents and unstructured data, used to ground chat apps and agents in company content.
- Cortex AgentsOrchestrate across structured and unstructured data, combining Analyst and Search to retrieve and synthesise answers.
- Snowflake CoWorkFormerly Snowflake Intelligence, a personal work agent that lets knowledge workers ask questions about enterprise data within governance controls.
- Snowflake CoCoFormerly Cortex Code, a data-native AI coding agent that helps developers build pipelines, apps and workflows through conversation.
Who is Snowflake Cortex AI best for?
- Snowflake customers because Cortex works on data already in their account with no extra pipelines.
- Data analysts and engineers who want to add LLM tasks to SQL workflows without managing models.
- Business users who can ask questions through CoWork or Cortex Analyst-based apps instead of waiting for reports.
- Regulated industries that need AI processing to stay inside a governed, audited environment.
Popular ways to use Snowflake Cortex AI
- Text analytics in SQL: classify support tickets or summarise reviews with AI Functions inside a query.
- Self-serve questions: let sales teams ask revenue questions in plain English through Cortex Analyst.
- Document search: build a chat assistant over policies or contracts with Cortex Search.
- Business agents: give employees CoWork to research data and answer questions across tools.
- Faster development: use CoCo to write and debug SQL, Python and pipelines.
Snowflake Cortex AI pricing (October 2026)
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | Free for 30 days | $400 in free credits to try the platform, including Cortex AI functions |
| On-demand | Usage-based, pay month to month | Pay for compute, storage and AI usage as you go; credit rates vary by edition, cloud and region |
| Capacity | Pre-paid commitment (custom pricing) | Discounted rates for committing to a level of usage |
| Editions | Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical, VPS | Higher editions add features such as multi-cluster compute, Tri-Secret Secure and failover |
Cortex AI services are billed by consumption, with costs that vary by service, model and tokens processed; Snowflake publishes rates in its Service Consumption Table. Since Summit 2026, CoCo is billed on token use on every surface, including Snowsight.
Snowflake Cortex AI pros and cons
Pros
- AI runs on governed data without moving it
- Familiar SQL interface for analysts
- Choice of models from several providers
- Strong security and compliance features
- Generous 30-day trial with $400 in credits
Cons
- Only practical if your data is in Snowflake
- Consumption costs can be hard to predict
- Frequent renames make documentation confusing
- Natural-language accuracy depends on good semantic models
How to get started with Snowflake Cortex AI
- Sign up for a 30-day Snowflake trial or use an existing account.
- Check that Cortex features and your preferred models are available in your region.
- Run an AI Function on a small table, such as summarising a column of text.
- Create a semantic model and test Cortex Analyst with real business questions.
- Set budgets and usage monitoring before giving CoWork or CoCo to wider teams.
Tips to get better results from Snowflake Cortex AI
- Test AI Functions on a sample with LIMIT before running them on millions of rows.
- Invest time in semantic model descriptions; they drive Cortex Analyst accuracy.
- Use per-user limits and credit monitoring rather than broad access bans to control spend.
- Pick smaller models for simple classification tasks to reduce cost.
Snowflake Cortex AI vs alternatives
The closest alternative is Databricks, whose Genie One and Agent Bricks offer similar AI analytics and agents on a lakehouse and appeal more to engineering-heavy teams. Cloud data teams on Google or Microsoft stacks may lean on Gemini in BigQuery or Microsoft Copilot with Microsoft Power BI.
For BI and natural-language search over Snowflake data without building it yourself, ThoughtSpot and Hex both connect directly to Snowflake. Cortex wins when you want AI inside the warehouse itself, under the same governance. See all best AI data analytics tools.
Our verdict: is Snowflake Cortex AI worth it?
Snowflake Cortex AI is the obvious choice for organisations already on Snowflake that want LLMs, natural-language analytics and agents without moving data. If your data is elsewhere, or you need simple analysis on a few files, a standalone tool will be cheaper and easier.
