Warp Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives

Open source AI terminal and agent platform for running coding agents locally and in the cloud.

FreemiumCodingReviewed October 2026

What is Warp?

Warp started as a modern terminal and has grown into what the company calls an open platform for automating development. Today it includes the Warp Terminal, the Warp Agent that can run commands and edit code, a standalone Warp Agent CLI, cloud agents, and Warp Factories, a system for running fleets of coding agents across the software lifecycle.

Founder Zach Lloyd introduced Warp in public beta on the Mac in April 2022, and Linux and Windows versions followed. In February 2026 Warp launched Oz for orchestrating agents in parallel. On 29 April 2026 it open-sourced the terminal, with the UI framework under MIT and the rest under AGPLv3, and in August 2026 it launched Warp Factories. Warp says more than 800,000 developers use it.

Warp feels different from a classic terminal: output is grouped into blocks, the input editor works like a text editor, and AI is available inline. You can switch between frontier models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, use open-weight models, or bring your own keys, and Warp states it has zero data retention agreements with its contracted LLM providers.

Key features of Warp

  • Modern terminalCommand output grouped into blocks, an IDE-style input editor, completions and workflows, now open source.
  • Warp AgentDescribe a task in plain English and the agent runs commands, edits files and fixes errors, asking for approval as configured.
  • Warp Agent CLIA standalone coding agent that works in any terminal, not just Warp’s own app.
  • Cloud agents and FactoriesRun agents in Warp Cloud or your own VPC, triggered from Slack, Linear, Jira, GitHub or GitLab, with evaluation and benchmarking built in.
  • Model choiceUse Claude, GPT, Gemini or open-weight models, or connect your own API keys on supported plans.
  • MCP supportNative Model Context Protocol support lets agents use external tools and data sources.

Who is Warp best for?

  • Backend and DevOps engineers who spend most of their day in the terminal and want AI help with commands and scripts.
  • Developers using several agents because Warp can run and manage multiple agents in parallel.
  • Platform teams that want to automate repeatable engineering work with cloud agents and factories.
  • Open source supporters who prefer a terminal whose code they can inspect and build.

Popular ways to use Warp

  • Command help: describe what you want and let the agent build the right shell command.
  • Debugging: ask the agent to read an error, find the cause and propose a fix.
  • Infrastructure tasks: automate deployments, log searches and environment setup with approvals.
  • Ticket automation: trigger cloud agents from Linear or Jira issues to open pull requests.
  • Parallel agents: run several coding agents on separate tasks and review their output in one place.

Warp pricing (October 2026)

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$0Terminal, Warp Agent CLI, limited cloud agents, bring your own AI, pay-as-you-go reloads
Build$20/month or $18/month billed annually1,500 credits, full Warp Agent access, reload discounts, unlimited cloud storage
Max$200/month or $180/month billed annually18,000 credits, everything in Build
Business$50/user/month or $45/user billed annually1,500 credits per seat, SAML SSO, custom API keys, team usage metrics; up to 25 seats

Annual billing saves about 10%. Extra AI usage is bought as credit reloads, with volume discounts on paid plans.

Warp pros and cons

Pros

  • Fast, modern terminal that is now open source
  • Agent works directly where commands run
  • Wide model choice including BYOK
  • Cloud agents and factories for team automation
  • Runs on macOS, Linux and Windows

Cons

  • Credit-based AI usage can be hard to predict
  • Large jump in price from Build to Max
  • Some developers prefer a minimal terminal without AI
  • Factories are newer and still maturing

How to get started with Warp

  1. Download Warp for macOS, Linux or Windows from warp.dev.
  2. Import your shell settings and theme.
  3. Try asking the agent a plain-English question about a command.
  4. Set agent permissions so risky commands always need approval.
  5. Upgrade or add your own API keys if you need more AI usage.

Tips to get better results from Warp

  • Keep auto-approve off for destructive commands such as deletions and deployments.
  • Save repeated command sequences as workflows for your team.
  • Use cheaper models for quick command questions to conserve credits.
  • Review the open source code or docs if you need to check how data is handled.

Warp vs alternatives

Warp overlaps with terminal agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, but it also gives you the terminal itself and a platform to run agents in the cloud. Cline offers a CLI and editor agent with pay-as-you-go pricing.

If you prefer to work in an editor, Cursor and Zed keep AI next to the code rather than next to your shell. See all best AI coding tools.

Our verdict: is Warp worth it?

Warp is a good fit for developers who spend most of their time in the terminal and want agents close to their commands. The free tier and open source terminal make it easy to try, while teams can grow into cloud agents and factories later.
