Updated November 2026. Cursor and Claude Code are the two AI coding tools developers argue about most. Both can read your codebase, plan a change and edit dozens of files for you. They take very different routes to get there, and in 2026 their pricing changed enough that last year’s comparisons are out of date.
Short answer: pick Cursor if you want an AI-powered code editor with fast autocomplete and you like steering every edit yourself. Pick Claude Code if you would rather hand a whole task to an agent, review the result, and pay one flat subscription that already covers Claude’s best models. Many developers use both: Cursor as the editor, Claude Code running inside it.

What changed in 2026
If you last looked at Cursor in 2025, three things are different:
- New owner. SpaceX bought Cursor in a deal that closed in August 2026. Cursor now sits alongside the Grok assistant and X.
- New plans. Since 12 October 2026, new customers buy Cursor as part of “The X Subscription”, a bundle that also includes Grok and X Premium perks. The old Hobby, Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans still work for existing subscribers but are closed to new sign-ups.
- Model access is shifting. Cursor’s own models (Composer 2.5) and Grok models are included in your usage pool. Third-party models such as Claude, GPT and Gemini are billed separately at API list prices. OpenAI has also said it will cut Cursor’s access to its models on 12 November 2026, so check which GPT models are still available before you rely on them.
Claude Code changed less. It is still included with every paid Claude plan, and in 2026 Anthropic added a higher Ultra tier and doubled the 5-hour usage limits.
How they work: editor first vs agent first
Cursor
Cursor looks and feels like VS Code, so your extensions, themes and shortcuts carry over. The AI is woven into the editor: Tab predicts your next edit as you type, you can select code and ask for a change inline, and the Agent panel can plan and carry out larger tasks across files. You see every diff in the editor and accept or reject it. On Premium and above, Cloud Agents can work on tasks in the background and Bugbot reviews pull requests.
Claude Code
Claude Code starts from the task instead of the file. You describe what you want (“add rate limiting to the API and write tests for it”), and Claude reads the relevant code, makes a plan, edits files and runs commands such as your test suite. It asks for permission before it changes files or runs commands, unless you allow those actions in advance. You can run it in a terminal, in VS Code or JetBrains through an extension, in the Claude desktop app, or on the web, where tasks run in the cloud. If you have not set it up yet, follow our guide to installing Claude Code on Mac, Windows and Linux.
The practical difference: Cursor makes you faster at writing code. Claude Code writes more of the code for you and asks you to review it.
Pricing compared
Cursor (The X Subscription, for new customers)
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited Agent and Chat, no third-party models |
| Plus | $8/month | Cursor and Grok models at fixed settings; no Auto, Cloud Agents or third-party models |
| Premium | $30/month | 4x Plus usage, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot, third-party models at API price |
| Super | $100/month | 15x Plus usage, priority access at peak times |
| Ultra | $200/month | 50x Plus usage, earliest access to new models |
| Teams | $30, $100 or $200 per seat | Seat tiers match the plans above, plus admin and SSO |
The usage pool resets weekly and covers Cursor’s own models. If you want Claude Sonnet 5.5 inside Cursor, for example, you pay Anthropic’s list price on top (currently $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens) from prepaid credit.
Claude Code (included with Claude plans)
| Plan | Price | Claude Code usage |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not included |
| Pro | $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly | Included, suited to shorter sessions |
| Max | $100/month | 5x Pro usage, Fable access, $100/month in API credits |
| Ultra | $200/month | 10x Pro weekly usage, no 5-hour limit for verified accounts, $200/month in API credits |
| Team | $25 per seat monthly ($20 yearly); Premium seats $125 ($100 yearly) | Included; Premium seats get 5x Standard usage |
Your Claude Code usage shares one allowance with Claude chat and the desktop app. You can also skip the subscription and pay per token through the Claude API, which suits light or automated use. Not sure what a token is? Our plain-English guide to AI tokens explains it.
Which is cheaper? If you mainly want Claude models, Claude Code usually costs less, because the subscription includes Claude usage while Cursor bills it on top. If you are happy with Cursor’s own Composer and Grok models, Cursor Plus at $8 is the cheapest way to get a capable AI editor.

Using Cursor and Claude Code together
Because Cursor is built on VS Code, you can install the Claude Code extension in Cursor or run Claude Code in Cursor’s built-in terminal. A common setup is to keep Cursor on the cheap Plus plan for autocomplete and quick edits, and let Claude Code on a Claude Pro or Max plan handle the bigger tasks. You get both styles of help without paying API prices for Claude inside Cursor.
Which should you choose?
Choose Cursor if you:
- Want AI suggestions while you type and like to review each edit as it happens.
- Want to switch between models from several providers in one place.
- Are on a tight budget and are happy with Cursor’s own models ($8 Plus plan).
- Are moving from VS Code and want everything to feel familiar.
Choose Claude Code if you:
- Prefer describing a task and reviewing the finished change.
- Already pay for Claude Pro or Max, since Claude Code is included.
- Work across large codebases, scripts and terminals, not only inside an editor.
- Want predictable monthly costs for heavy use of Claude models.

A note on code privacy
Both tools send code to AI models in the cloud. Business and enterprise plans on both sides add admin controls and stricter data handling. Before you point either tool at client or company code, check your plan’s data settings and your employer’s policy. Our guide to using AI safely covers the basics.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code is not part of Claude’s free plan. You need Claude Pro ($20/month), Max, Ultra, a Team or Enterprise seat, or API credits.
Can I use Claude models in Cursor?
Yes. On Cursor Premium and above, Claude models are available and billed at Anthropic’s API list prices from prepaid credit. They are not part of the weekly usage pool. Existing subscribers on legacy Cursor plans have their own pools for third-party models.
Is Cursor still free?
Cursor has a free plan with limited Agent and Chat requests. It does not include third-party models.
Which is better for beginners?
Cursor is easier to start with if you already write code, because it looks like a normal editor. Claude Code suits beginners who prefer explaining what they want in plain English, but you should still review every change it makes before you ship it.
What happened to Cursor Pro?
Cursor Pro, Pro+ and Ultra are now legacy plans. Existing subscribers can keep them or switch to The X Subscription with a prorated refund. New customers choose from Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra.
