Perplexity vs ChatGPT (2026): Which AI Is Better for Research and Everyday Work?

⏱ 6 min read

Updated November 2026. Perplexity and ChatGPT both answer questions in plain English and both can search the web. They are built for different jobs, though. Perplexity is a search engine first: every answer comes with sources you can check. ChatGPT is a general assistant first: it writes, codes, analyses files, makes images and now runs multi-step tasks for you.

Short answer: use Perplexity when you need current, well-sourced facts quickly, such as research, news, product comparisons or citations for a report. Use ChatGPT when you need something made: a draft, a plan, code, a spreadsheet analysis or an image. If you can only pay for one, ChatGPT Plus covers more ground. If most of your AI use is looking things up, Perplexity Pro is the better buy.

The core difference: finding vs making

Ask both tools “What are the UK’s new rules on e-scooters?” and you will see the difference. Perplexity searches, reads several pages and gives a short answer with numbered citations linking to each source. ChatGPT will also search when the question needs fresh information, but its strength shows when you follow up with “now write a one-page summary for my team and a checklist for our office”. It keeps the context, writes the document and can turn it into a file.

That pattern holds across most tasks. Perplexity is quicker for questions with a factual answer that lives somewhere on the web. ChatGPT is stronger when you need the answer written, built or worked out for you.

Search and research quality

Perplexity was designed around search. Answers are short, sources are always visible, and you can narrow a search to academic papers, social discussions or finance data. Pro adds deep research reports, more advanced models, and premium data sources such as Statista, PitchBook and S&P Capital IQ, which are useful for market research. Max adds what Perplexity calls expert-level research and its Model Council feature, which compares answers from several models.

ChatGPT searches the web when your question needs it and shows links to its sources. Its deep research mode reads dozens of pages and writes a long, structured report. On Plus you get 10 full and 15 lighter deep research runs a month. Free users get a handful of lighter runs.

For a quick fact you want to verify, Perplexity is faster and easier to check. For a long report you will edit and reuse, ChatGPT’s deep research usually produces a more complete first draft.

Whichever you use, click through to the sources for anything important. Both tools can still misread a page or rely on a weak source. Our guide to using AI safely explains how to check AI answers.

Writing, coding and everyday tasks

This is where ChatGPT pulls ahead. It drafts emails and articles, rewrites in different tones, analyses spreadsheets and PDFs you upload, writes and debugs code with Codex, and creates images. Plus subscribers also get Projects for organising work, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and ChatGPT Work, which can carry out multi-step jobs on the web and desktop.

Perplexity can write and summarise too, and Pro now creates documents and simple apps and connects to more than 400 apps. Its Computer feature can take actions for you using monthly credits. Still, its writing tools are built around research, so it is better at “summarise what the sources say” than at “write this in my voice”.

Pricing compared

Tier Perplexity ChatGPT
Free $0: cited answers, basic models, daily limit, Comet browser $0: GPT-6 text chats, limited uploads, images and deep research, ads
Budget Education Pro for verified students (about $10/month) Go, $8/month: higher limits, more memory, still shows ads
Standard Pro, $20/month Plus, $20/month
Power user Max, $200/month Pro, $100, $200 or $500/month
Business Enterprise Pro, $40 per user/month; Enterprise Max, $325 per user/month Business, $25 per user/month ($20 billed yearly); Enterprise on request

At $20 a month the two main plans cost the same, so the choice comes down to what you do most. For a full breakdown of OpenAI’s tiers, see our guide to ChatGPT plans and pricing.

Models: one family vs many

ChatGPT runs OpenAI’s own models. Since October 2026, free users get GPT-6 Luna and Plus users get GPT-6 Sol by default, with GPT-6 Astra reserved for Pro.

Perplexity Pro lets you choose from frontier models built by different AI labs, alongside Perplexity’s own search-tuned models. That flexibility is handy if you want to compare how different models answer the same question, though the line-up changes often.

Privacy

On ChatGPT’s consumer plans, your chats can be used to train models unless you turn that off in Data Controls. Business and Enterprise exclude your data from training by default. Perplexity also offers settings to stop your data being used to improve its models, and Enterprise plans add retention controls and audit logs. On any consumer plan, avoid pasting confidential client or company data.

Which should you choose?

Choose Perplexity if you:

  • Use AI mostly to look things up and want sources on every answer.
  • Do market, academic or competitor research and value premium data sources.
  • Want a free AI browser (Comet) that can summarise pages and complete tasks.
  • Like trying several AI models in one place.

Choose ChatGPT if you:

  • Write, plan or code most days.
  • Upload files such as spreadsheets and PDFs for analysis.
  • Want image generation, voice chat and custom GPTs.
  • Want an assistant that can carry out multi-step tasks with ChatGPT Work.

Many people use free Perplexity for search alongside a paid ChatGPT plan. That pairing costs $20 a month and covers both jobs well. You can also compare ChatGPT with Claude and Google Gemini, or browse the best AI research and search tools.
