Prompt Engineering Basics: Write Prompts That Actually Work

⏱ 1 min read

A prompt is simply instructions. The more clearly you explain what you want, the better the result. Most great prompts contain the same five ingredients.

The 5 building blocks

  • Role: who should the AI act as? (“You are a senior copywriter…”)
  • Context: background the AI needs: audience, goal, constraints.
  • Task: the specific thing to do, stated directly.
  • Format: how the answer should look: bullets, table, word count.
  • Examples: one or two samples of the style you want.

A reusable template

You are a [role].
Context: [who it's for, goal, constraints].
Task: [what to produce].
Format: [structure, length, tone].
Example: [optional sample].

Iterate, don’t restart

If the first answer misses, reply with what to change (“shorter”, “more formal”, “add a table”) instead of starting over. The AI keeps the context and improves quickly.
