Captions Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
AI video editor for talking videos, with auto captions, AI Edit, eye contact fixes, dubbing and AI avatars.
What is Captions?
Captions is an AI video editing app built for people who talk to the camera. You record or upload a clip, and it adds styled captions and cuts out pauses. AI Edit can also add zooms, B-roll, music and transitions for you. It started as a mobile app and now also runs on the web and desktop.
The company was founded in 2021 by former Snap employees Gaurav Misra and Dwight Churchill and is based in New York. In September 2025 it renamed itself Mirage to focus on building its own video models, but kept Captions as the name of the app. The Mirage Studio avatar product launched in June 2025 and has since been merged into Captions.
In March 2026 Mirage raised $75 million in growth financing from General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund to keep building models for the app. Captions says it has 20 million users. What sets it apart is its focus on short videos where a person is speaking, with tools that polish delivery, translation and pacing.

Captions vs alternatives
Captions is closest to CapCut, which is cheaper and offers more manual editing, and to VEED, which is stronger for browser-based team work. Captions stands out for polishing talking-head videos and for its eye-contact and lip-sync tools.
For avatar-led business videos, HeyGen offers more presenter options, and Descript is better for long-form podcasts. OpusClip is the specialist for turning long videos into shorts. See all best AI video generators.
Our verdict: is Captions worth it?
Captions is one of the best tools for creators who talk to camera and publish short videos often. Pay for Max if you want AI Edit and avatars, but look elsewhere for long-form or heavy timeline editing.
