Gemini Code Assist Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
Google's AI coding assistant for business teams, with completions, chat and agent mode in your IDE.
What is Gemini Code Assist?
Gemini Code Assist is Google’s AI coding assistant. It plugs into popular editors such as VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and Android Studio, and gives developers code completion, code generation, a chat assistant that understands your open files, and an agent mode for multi-step tasks. It is sold and managed through Google Cloud in two business editions, Standard and Enterprise.
Google announced Gemini Code Assist at Cloud Next in April 2024 as the successor to Duet AI for Developers. Agent mode became generally available in VS Code and IntelliJ in July 2025, and newer models such as Gemini 3.5 Flash arrived in June 2026. The biggest change came on 18 June 2026: the free individual tier and access through Google AI Pro and Ultra stopped working, and those users were moved to Google’s Antigravity platform.
What sets it apart today is its focus on organisations. Both editions include source citations, IP indemnification and support for VPC Service Controls, and they connect to Firebase, BigQuery, Cloud Run and Google Cloud databases. Enterprise adds code customisation from private GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket repositories. Since 4 September 2026, new customers without an existing subscription buy through Google Cloud sales rather than the console.

Gemini Code Assist vs alternatives
GitHub Copilot is the closest rival for business teams and supports more editors, plus deep GitHub integration and a free tier. Cursor is a full AI-first editor rather than a plugin and suits developers who want agents built into the IDE. JetBrains AI is the natural pick if your team lives in IntelliJ or PyCharm and wants the vendor’s own assistant.
For strict privacy and self-hosting, Tabnine offers on-premises deployment options. AWS customers can look at Kiro, Amazon’s spec-driven coding tool, while Google’s own Jules by Google handles asynchronous coding tasks in the cloud. Gemini Code Assist wins when Google Cloud integration and governance matter most. See all best AI coding tools.
Our verdict: is Gemini Code Assist worth it?
Gemini Code Assist is now a business product: a solid, well-governed coding assistant for teams that already run on Google Cloud, with Enterprise code customisation as its standout. Individual developers should look elsewhere: the free tier ended in June 2026 and Google now points them to Antigravity.
