Quizlet Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives

Flashcard and study platform with AI-made study guides, practice tests and adaptive Learn mode.

FreemiumEducation & LearningReviewed October 2026

What is Quizlet?

Quizlet is a study platform best known for digital flashcards and a huge library of sets shared by students and teachers. Around those flashcards it offers Learn mode, practice tests, matching games, spelling practice and the classroom game Quizlet Live. Quizlet says it is used by more than 20 million students and teachers each month. It runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps.

Andrew Sutherland created Quizlet in 2005 to memorise French vocabulary, and it launched publicly in January 2007. In 2023 it added Q-Chat, an AI tutor built on OpenAI’s API, and other AI tools. Kurt Beidler became CEO in July 2024. In 2025 Quizlet added course-based features that turn notes into study guides and practice questions, in February 2026 it acquired the AI note-taking app Coconote, and by March 2026 it connected with ChatGPT.

Quizlet’s main advantage is its scale: for many textbooks and courses someone has already made a set, so you can start studying in seconds. The trade-off is that several popular study modes are now limited on the free plan. Quizlet Plus removes ads and lifts those limits, and Plus Unlimited removes caps on practice tests and Learn rounds.

Key features of Quizlet

  • Flashcards and shared libraryCreate unlimited flashcard sets or search the large library of sets made by other students and teachers.
  • Learn modeAn adaptive study mode that mixes question types and repeats the terms you get wrong. Free users get limited rounds.
  • AI practice testsGenerate a practice test from a set to check what you know before an exam.
  • Notes to study guidesUpload or paste class notes and Quizlet turns them into study guides, flashcards and practice questions.
  • Quizlet Live and gamesClassroom team games and matching games make review more active for groups.
  • Images, audio and diagramsPlus members can add images, record custom audio and build diagram sets with custom shapes.

  • College students reviewing large amounts of terminology in subjects like biology, law or medicine.
  • Language learners who want to drill vocabulary with audio and spelling modes.

How to get started with Quizlet

  1. Create a free account at quizlet.com or in the mobile app.
  2. Search for a set for your course or create your own flashcards.
  3. Try Learn mode and a practice test on the set.
  4. Upload notes to generate a study guide if you have class material.
  5. Upgrade to Plus if the free round limits get in the way.

Tips to get better results from Quizlet

  • Check shared sets against your textbook; anyone can publish one.
  • Add images to cards for visual subjects; recall improves when cards are specific.
  • Spread Learn sessions over several days instead of one long session.
  • Compare the web price with in-app prices before you subscribe.

Quizlet vs alternatives

Knowt imports Quizlet sets and keeps Learn mode and practice tests free, so it is the main budget alternative. Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) is better for questioning many source documents at once, but it is not designed for flashcard drilling.

Khanmigo offers guided tutoring rather than memorisation, and Duolingo is a more structured choice for languages. General chatbots like ChatGPT can quiz you on notes but do not save sets or track progress. See all best AI education tools.

Our verdict: is Quizlet worth it?

Quizlet remains a strong choice for memorisation, especially when a ready-made set for your course already exists. The free plan is enough for basic flashcards, but regular Learn and practice test users will want Plus. Students on a tight budget should compare Knowt first.
