Short answer: If you live in Google’s world (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android, YouTube), Gemini is the more convenient assistant and its paid plan bundles a lot of extras such as cloud storage. If you want the most polished general-purpose assistant with the biggest ecosystem, ChatGPT still leads. Both are excellent; the right one depends on where your work already happens.

1. Everyday chat quality
For day-to-day questions, both assistants are very capable. ChatGPT feels slightly more consistent: it follows complex instructions well, formats answers cleanly and is good at asking clarifying questions. Gemini’s top models are equally smart on many tasks and are especially strong at reasoning across text, images, audio and video together.
A difference worth knowing: on the free plan, Gemini now gives you its lightweight Flash-Lite model, while the more capable Pro model sits behind the paid Google AI Pro plan. ChatGPT’s free plan also limits access to its best models but tends to give you a taste of them before falling back.
2. Google Workspace and Android integration
This is Gemini’s biggest advantage. Gemini can:
- Search and summarise your Gmail (“What did the accountant ask me for last week?”).
- Draft documents in Google Docs and build formulas or tables in Sheets.
- Find files in Drive and answer questions about them.
- Work as the assistant on Android phones, with access to apps like Maps, Calendar and Keep.
- Summarise YouTube videos and answer questions about them.
ChatGPT can connect to Google Drive, Gmail and Calendar too, but it feels like an add-on rather than built-in. If you spend your day in Google apps, Gemini removes a lot of copy-and-paste.
3. Writing
ChatGPT is generally the stronger writer for marketing copy, emails and creative work, and it is better at matching a specific voice when you give examples. Gemini writes clearly and is very good at factual, structured content, and its Canvas feature makes editing long documents easy. For long-form writing many people actually prefer Claude; see Claude vs ChatGPT.
4. Research and search
Both offer a Deep Research mode that reads dozens of sources and writes a report. Gemini’s version benefits from Google’s search index and is fast; ChatGPT’s tends to produce slightly more polished, opinionated reports. For quick factual lookups, both cite sources, but always click through for anything important.
Gemini also offers NotebookLM-style features, such as Audio Overviews that turn documents into a podcast-style conversation. That is excellent for studying.
5. Images and video
Both create and edit images inside the chat. Gemini’s image models are strong at editing existing photos while keeping faces and objects consistent. ChatGPT’s image generation is very good at following detailed prompts and rendering text inside images.
For video, Google is ahead for most users: paid Google AI plans include credits for Flow, Google’s AI filmmaking tool built on its Veo video models. ChatGPT offers Sora video generation on some plans. If video matters to you, see free AI image-to-video generators.
6. Coding
ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, which works in the terminal, IDE and cloud. Google offers Gemini Code Assist, the Gemini CLI and the Jules coding agent, and Gemini models are available inside tools like Cursor. Both are capable; developers usually pick based on which models perform best on their own codebase.
7. Pricing and value
Gemini’s paid plans are bundled with Google One, so Google AI Pro at $19.99/month also includes several terabytes of cloud storage and other perks. If you already pay for Google One storage, upgrading to AI Pro can be very good value. Eligible students in some countries can also get Google AI Pro free for a period; check Google’s current offer.
ChatGPT Plus at about $20/month is focused purely on AI, with higher message limits, Deep Research, Codex and more. Read our Gemini pricing guide for every tier explained.
8. Privacy
Gemini activity is linked to your Google account. You can turn off Gemini Apps Activity to stop chats being saved for longer and used to improve Google’s models, though some data is kept briefly for safety. ChatGPT has a similar setting under Data Controls. Workspace and Enterprise accounts on both platforms are excluded from training by default.
