CoCounsel Legal Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
Thomson Reuters' legal AI assistant for research, drafting and document review grounded in Westlaw content.
What is CoCounsel Legal?
CoCounsel Legal is Thomson Reuters’ AI assistant for lawyers. It combines deep legal research grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law with drafting, document review and guided multi-step workflows. Lawyers can ask a research question, review large sets of documents against a list of questions, or build a brief, with answers linked back to authority. It is sold to law firms, corporate legal departments and government users.
CoCounsel began life at legal research company Casetext, which launched it in March 2023. Thomson Reuters acquired Casetext later in 2023 and folded CoCounsel into Westlaw and Practical Law. In August 2025 it launched CoCounsel Legal with agentic workflows and Deep Research. In March 2026 Thomson Reuters announced a next-generation version rebuilt with Anthropic’s Claude Agent SDK, with US beta testing first and general availability planned later in 2026.
CoCounsel’s main advantage is content. Because it sits on Westlaw and Practical Law, research answers can draw on cases, statutes and expert practice notes rather than the open web. It connects to iManage, NetDocuments and SharePoint, works in Word, Outlook and Teams, and holds SOC 2 and ISO 42001 certification. Thomson Reuters says customer data is not used to train models. It does not replace legal advice.

CoCounsel Legal vs alternatives
CoCounsel’s closest rival is Lexis+ with Protégé, which offers a similar mix of research, drafting and workflows on top of LexisNexis content. Most firms choose based on which research service they already use. Harvey competes at the large-firm end with a broader agent platform but without its own case law library.
For contract-heavy teams, Spellbook and Luminance focus on drafting and negotiation rather than research. Small firms that mainly need practice management help may prefer Clio Duo. See all best AI legal and finance tools.
Our verdict: is CoCounsel Legal worth it?
CoCounsel Legal is a strong choice for litigators and firms that already rely on Westlaw or Practical Law, because its answers are grounded in that content. Buyers should expect bundled, quote-based pricing and some product-name confusion. Treat its output as a starting point that a lawyer must verify.
