Lexis+ with Protégé (formerly Lexis+ AI) Review: Features, Pricing & Alternatives
LexisNexis legal AI platform for research, drafting and workflows, with citations checked by Shepard's.
What is Lexis+ with Protégé?
Lexis+ with Protégé is LexisNexis’s generative AI platform for legal research, drafting and analysis. Its built-in assistant, Protégé, answers research questions using primary law, LexisNexis secondary sources and Practical Guidance, drafts motions, briefs and contracts, and runs multi-step workflows. Citations in answers and drafts are checked with Shepard’s, LexisNexis’s long-standing citation service, so lawyers can see whether authority is still good law.
The product launched in 2023 as Lexis+ AI. In February 2026 LexisNexis replaced it with Lexis+ with Protégé, adding more than 300 pre-built workflows, a no-code workflow builder and access to models from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI. In May 2026 it added Protégé Work for agentic tasks, agentic drafting, collaboration Workrooms, customer-held encryption keys and a larger Vault that also accepts audio, video and images. Rollout outside the US continues through 2026.
Its main differentiator is trusted content plus verification. Shepard’s Verify flags citations that cannot be confirmed against LexisNexis sources, which helps reduce the risk of fake or misquoted cases. LexisNexis says customer data is not used to train public models or to improve AI for other customers, and it offers bring-your-own-key encryption. Like any legal AI tool, it supports but does not replace a lawyer’s judgment.

Lexis+ with Protégé vs alternatives
The obvious comparison is CoCounsel, Thomson Reuters’ AI built on Westlaw and Practical Law. Both offer research, drafting and agentic workflows, so the choice often comes down to which research service your firm prefers. Harvey is a strong alternative for large firms that want a broad agent platform rather than a research-first tool.
For contract-focused work, Spellbook runs inside Word and Luminance handles negotiation and contract analytics. General chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude can help with writing, but they lack verified case law and Shepard’s checks. See all best AI legal and finance tools.
Our verdict: is Lexis+ with Protégé worth it?
Lexis+ with Protégé is a sensible pick for firms and legal teams that already research on Lexis and want AI that cites and checks authority. The 2026 relaunch added useful workflows, agentic drafting and strong security options. Pricing is quote-only, and every answer still needs a lawyer’s review.
